Di Methyl Sulphoxide ( DMSO )
Description:
Dimethyl Sulphoxide DMSO is a ubiquitous reagent used in many biological
applications as a universal solvent. It will dissolve many organic and inorganic
subatances particularly peptides and proteins both polar and non polar.
It can be metabolised within the body and has a high boiling point at 189C.
Uses:
DMSO is finding increased use in manufacturing processes to produce microelectronic devices.
It is used in th PCR reaction within biological systems to stop secondary structures occuring in DNA tempate and primer binding.
DMSO may also be used as cryo-protectant added to cell media to reduce ice formation and thereby prevent cell death during the freezing process.
